The Power of Our Perspective

” Each person does see the world in a different way. There is not a single, unifying, objective truth. We’re all limited by our perspective.”

-Siri Hustvedt

Nobody on this Earth has the same exact view of the world.

Everyone has been through different experiences, lessons, and problems.

According to Cambridge Dictionary, the word perspective means a particular way of viewing things that depends on one’s experience and personality.

You know how in reading certain books, there is always a point of view?

First, second, third…

But instead, I’m going to talk about our perspective in life not reading.

Matter of fact, perspective can change your life.

That’s what happened to me.

Okay, let me tell you the story…

Although I knew everyone dies, I didn’t really act like it was true.

For example, I would think that I was invincible.

It all changed when one day I went to sleep and woke up in the hospital.

At first I thought it was a dream, but it seemed way too real…

The doctors told me I had a seizure while I was asleep.

Although that might not seem scary to some people, that scared the daylights out of me.

It shifted my point of view from an “I’m invincible” to an :

” Oh crap, I need to get started on my life – FOR REAL.”

From then on, I challenged myself to do many different things.

From being more social, to starting a blog, that’s how much power that change of perspective had on me.

So, why does it have so much power?

It is so powerful because it helps you put yourself in another person’s shoes.

With perspective, you have empathy because you’re imagining yourself as if you’ve been in that particular situation.

Perspective also shapes people.

Nobody realizes this, but life is a game.

Life offers obstacles, and it’s totally up to you on what you’re going to do about it.

The great Greek philosopher Epictetus once said:

” It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

By the way, here are some perspectives to keep in mind if you want to truly live your life:

1. Realizing that life isn’t guaranteed

” I would rather die a meaningful death than live a meaningless life.”

-Corazon Aquino

Literally anyone can die at ANY TIME.

That’s what makes life scary at times.

But, that’s what also makes life worth living.

When I adopted this perspective, it made me think that I should do things that would make ME happy instead of other people.

2. The Always Learning Perspective

” Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”

-Anthony J. D’Angelo

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is always willing to learn.

Because when you learn something and apply it, you WILL grow as a person.

3. The Optimism Perspective

Remember that perspective is your perceived reality based on your experiences and beliefs.

This perspective is used by the people who decided to not be a victim of their circumstances.

Those people include Tyler Perry, Oprah, and so much more.

Optimistic people always look for the positive despite how bad their current situation is.

How to shift your perspective

Many perspective shifts happen when something traumatic happens in someone’s life, but it doesn’t have to be.

One way I learned how to shift my perspective on life was to believe in that point of view.

By the way, you realize that if you say something or hear something over and over, it becomes part of your belief system?

Well, now you know!

Here’s what I did:

  1. Believed in it – This is key!!!
  2. Imagine Yourself in that situation. – This is the most important part in implementing the change in perspective.
  3. Write down what you would do – Because it will help enforce the change in your point of view.

And that’s it!

It is simply not that hard, if you practice it then it will become a breeze for you.

We all see life through different lens.

That’s what separates the rich from the poor and the mediocre from the successful.

For those who forgot, perspective is your reality.

You can change your reality, and when you change your reality, you change your life forever.

” Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”

-Ralph Marston
